Polystrene Container Ban. ❌

The Queensland Government has introduced a statewide polystyrene and single use plastic ban – read this to find out what alternatives you can use.

Polystyrene containers are banned, so what are the alternatives?

Plastic pollution is a growing problem and, when it ends up in the wrong place, it can have serious consequences for the health of our communities, our environment and wildlife. Consequently, the Queensland Government has introduced a statewide single use plastic ban that will come into place in September 2021. This single use plastic ban also includes the banning of single use expanded polystyrene containers and cups in an effort of reducing plastics and single use items.

Why is polystyrene banned?

Expanded polystyrene has been, traditionally, used for a wide variety of food and shipping packaging solutions and has been so prominently used due to its cheap cost. The material is made from petrochemicals and is based on the compound styrene, a neurotoxin that is prone to leaching onto certain foods.

The foam form of expanded polystyrene is often mistaken as food by wildlife, which inevitably leads to countless numbers of animals dying per year by ingesting polystyrene and other single use items. The material does not biodegrade, instead, it fractures into smaller pieces that end up in our oceans. These small particles present the greatest long-term effects, as one these fragments enter our oceans they will remain there virtually forever.

What are the alternatives?

Alternatives to polystyrene include biodegradable paper, recycled cardboard, sugarcane and recyclable aluminium.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane packaging is a comparable, eco-friendly and affordable alternative to expanded polystyrene, single use plastic and other single use items, as it is renewable, biodegradable and compostable. It also boasts a wide range of features, including:

  • Tolerant of high temperatures (up to 200°F)
  • Grease and water-resistant
  • Durable
  • Freezer safe
  • Microwave safe
  • High insulation properties

Aluminium

Aluminium is an effective alternative to the single use items that have been banned as it efficiently protects and preserves the food and its quality. The packaging can be produced in different sizes and shapes – based on requirements – and, best of all, aluminium can be recycled. Other advantages include:

  • Heat conductivity and cooking capabilities
  • It is sterile and safe for use
  • The foil trays are fully recyclable
  • Can be used in the domestic and industrial sectors

Recycled cardboard & paper

Recycled cardboard and paper boxes, cups and dishes are a versatile single use item alternative, capable of being used for a range of different foods and purposes. The trays and food packaging solutions are made from 100% biodegradable and eco-friendly materials, which make them an excellent sustainable packaging option.
